How this build is configured
Starting with a brand-new E-450 cutaway chassis, the vehicle received a comprehensive UJoint Offroad 4x4 conversion in Colorado, 37-inch Falken Wildpeak tires, and a super-single wheel configuration.
Foundation then designed the composite habitat around the specific vehicle rather than forcing the project into a standard body envelope.
Why build a custom E-450 body?
One of the advantages of starting with a cutaway chassis is that the camper body does not have to conform to the dimensions of a factory cargo van.
On this project, the body height, cabover, and rear geometry were adjusted specifically for the intended configuration.
The rear alcove and centered spare tire also required the body, bumper, and storage package to work as one system rather than treating the bumper as something added after the habitat was complete.
4x4 underneath a rigid composite habitat
The E-Series is a body-on-frame platform capable of significant chassis articulation.
The UJoint conversion provides the off-road hardware underneath the vehicle, while Foundation’s body and mounting architecture are designed to reduce the transfer of chassis movement into the rigid composite camper.
This becomes increasingly important on a vehicle running 37-inch tires and intended for rougher use than a typical AWD camper.
The E-Series stepwell
The Foundation E-Series body incorporates a recessed stepwell into the habitat floor.
That creates a lower entry point without requiring the entire camper floor to be lowered relative to the chassis.
It is one of the architectural differences between the E-Series platform and Foundation’s Transit and Sprinter bodies.
