Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Composite Camper Bodies

We build our insulated composite body on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD cutaway — a turbo-diesel van known for range, torque, and high-mileage longevity, with all-wheel drive available. The cutaway architecture lets us mount a square, four-season composite habitat with true standing room, in two lengths: the compact FV-144 and the 95.5-square-foot FV-170.

Why the cutaway, not a cargo Sprinter

A high-roof cargo Sprinter curves in at the roof and walls and arrives uninsulated. Building on the 3500XD cutaway instead lets us install a square composite body that is wider and taller up top than the van’s roof curves away from — real width and headroom, flat walls with integrated mounting, a 36-inch cab-over, and a full passthrough to the cab. It is a better base for a four-season build than furring out a cargo van.

Diesel range, torque, and longevity

People choose the Sprinter for its turbo-diesel efficiency and torque — long range between fill-ups and easy mountain grades — and for a reputation for high-mileage longevity in expedition and commercial service. Available AWD adds real backcountry capability, the cab is refined and quiet, and it has a well-developed adventure-van aftermarket for parts, accessories, and support.

Who the Sprinter suits

It is the pick for long-range and full-time travel, mountain touring, and buyers who value resale. If you want gas simplicity, the lowest cost to buy and own, and dealer service almost anywhere, look at the Transit — the same Foundation body fits either.

Common questions

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter — questions people ask

What Sprinter sizes does Foundation offer?

Two: the FV-144 (73.5 sq ft) and the FV-170 (95.5 sq ft), both on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD cutaway, with a 7-foot interior height, 36-inch cab-over, and full cab passthrough.

Is the Sprinter available with all-wheel drive?

Yes — AWD is available on the Sprinter and is a common choice for backcountry travel. For low-range 4x4 with large all-terrain tires, the Ford E-Series conversion goes further.

Sprinter or Transit?

The body is the same on both, so it comes down to the chassis: Sprinter for diesel range, torque, longevity, and resale; Transit for value, gas simplicity, and dealer service almost anywhere. See the Transit platform page for the comparison.
