Platform · Ford E-Series 4x4
The E-Series carries the same interior sizes as our van bodies, but on the Ford E-Series cutaway — a body-on-frame chassis Ford has built for decades, with deep parts and service support and an aftermarket 4x4 conversion available. Ford’s 7.3-litre “Godzilla” gas V8 makes 325 hp and 450 lb-ft, it’s rated up to 14,500 lb GVWR, and it carries a 40-gallon tank. On our Zero-Torsion subframe with 22° of articulation, the frame flexes over the terrain while the subframe absorbs the twist, so the composite body stays square with far less of that load passed into it.

Yes. The E-Series is a body-on-frame chassis, which makes it well suited to a proper 4x4 conversion — a suspension lift, transfer case, and large all-terrain tires — done by a specialist 4x4 conversion partner. That is what turns the E-450 into a genuine backcountry expedition van, with low-range capability and ground clearance a unibody van can’t match. Foundation coordinates the chassis and builds and installs the composite body; the 4x4 conversion is performed by the conversion provider.
The E-Series is the choice when you want to go further off pavement and carry more. The body-on-frame design takes a real 4x4 conversion; the Godzilla gas V8 puts down strong low-end torque for grades and heavy builds, with fuel and service available almost anywhere; and up to 14,500 lb GVWR plus a 40-gallon tank give the payload and range for heavier, longer, farther trips. It works just as well for a mobile-work fleet as for a four-season expedition camper.
Both take the same Foundation body. The E-450 steps up the chassis rating for more payload — our E-158s and E-158 bodies are offered up to 14,500 lb GVWR — while the E-350 (E-138s / E-138) is the lighter, more maneuverable base. Choose by how much you’ll carry and how long a body you need; the spec table above lays out each.
A body-on-frame chassis twists over rough ground. Bolt a rigid box straight to it and that twist cracks walls and springs doors. Our Zero-Torsion subframe sits between the chassis and the body and pivots, allowing up to 22° of articulation — the frame flexes over the terrain while the subframe absorbs the twist, so the composite habitat stays square with far less load passed into it. It is built to outlast the truck, with corrosion-protected structure underneath.
Foundation manufactures the composite body, builds the Zero-Torsion subframe, and installs the body on the chassis as a final-stage manufacturer — road-legal and titled. The 4x4 conversion (lift, transfer case, axles, tires) is done by the specialist conversion provider. From there the interior is finished by you or your professional builder.
